I started by cleaning the salvaged wood really well. Then, drilled holes to add the knobs. When I screwed the knobs into each hole, I didn’t screw them in so they were flush to the front of the wood. I left them out a little, to give room for the lace to lay on the screw, instead of the knob. I also didn’t want to have the screw sticking out too far on the back of the wood, or it wouldn’t hang well on the wall.
During a trip with my husband, I found a wonderful home salvage shop. I bought several pieces of chippy white salvage wood that I knew I could use for something someday. One of those purchases that your husband says, “what are you going to do with that?” I found the perfect use for one of the pieces and I didn’t even have to trim the wood. It fit perfectly, like it was meant to be! Here is the plain window in our master bathroom before:
Such a pretty tub deserves a pretty window treatment. So, I had a goal to use things I already had. I had the white window panels from our last house. I had the piece of wood and the crystal knobs leftover from another project. I also had bought a set of 10 lace napkins from an antique store. I also had lots of ribbon that I could use.
Next, I added regular hangers to the back of the board, one in the middle, and one on each side.
With the board being all done, I was ready to work on the curtains.
I knew I wanted a casual elegant look to the curtains. Something that was swagged and gathered. I also wanted one of the lace napkins at each swag. So, I measured and marked where I wanted each napkin. Then, I sewed each napkin and the lace ties to each spot.
Now, for the fun part. Hanging the curtains!
There’s no specific science to how I did this. I really just gathered tucked and pulled until I got the look I wanted. I used the lace ties to tie it all up to each crystal knob. It does take a little time and patience, but its so worth it!
I also added the old window to soften things up a little more. My husband asked my why we bought a new house, since I’m busy making things look old. I really think it adds to the character. I’m really pleased with how the whole thing turned out. I hope you’ll try a little DIY with things you already have too. It’s a fun challenge.
Thanks for stopping by!
